Paolo De Poli

Paolo De Poli (1905–1996) was an Italian artist and artisan celebrated for his mastery of copper enameling. Born in Padua, he trained in woodcarving and sculpture at the Pietro Selvatico Art School before discovering enamel in the 1930s—a medium that would define his life’s work.

De Poli seamlessly united ancient metalworking traditions with modern decorative sensibilities. His career was marked by fruitful collaborations with leading post-war architects and designers, most notably Gio Ponti, with whom he crafted expressive furniture and decorative pieces. Exploring scale and vivid chromatic nuance, De Poli’s repertoire ranges from intimate enameled trays and panels to monumental murals and sculptures, all characterized by rich colors, tactile surfaces, and fluid dynamism. A regular exhibitor at the Venice Biennale and the Milan Triennale, his visionary craftsmanship played a pivotal role in redefining 20th-century Italian decorative arts.
