Joe Armitage’s childhood unfolded along the banks of the Thames, near the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. Surrounded by the ever-changing beauty of nature, his early years were shaped by endless explorations of this lush, vibrant world. In winter, the Victorian greenhouses were lit with colourful lights, transforming tropical plants into dramatic, otherworldly shapes. While studying photography in 2006, Armitage captured this surreal scene with his SLR camera. Among the plants was the Cycad, a palm-like species once abundant in the Triassic and Jurassic periods but now in decline. Cycad light collection doesn't mimic any single plant but aims to evoke the sense of drama and discovery felt when observing tropical plants at night.
