DESIGNER

Hans Hopfer

Hans Hopfer (born 1931) is a German designer, painter, and sculptor, widely regarded as the inventor of the concept of “seating landscapes.” His innovative approach redefined living spaces through modular, flexible, and user-centered furniture design.

He began his career in 1964 in Nuremberg, where he developed a design philosophy based on functionality, comfort, and durability. Early projects such as Bausystem (1965) and Mobiliante (1967) introduced streamlined, modular seating solutions that anticipated contemporary lifestyles.

His collaboration with Roche Bobois led to the creation of fully modular, low-level seating systems designed to adapt to evolving ways of living. In 1971, he designed the Mah Jong sofa, a revolutionary composition of cushions offering complete freedom of form and use, now considered an icon of contemporary design and a defining expression of Hopfer’s vision.
