Born in Oswego, Illinois, he trained at the Art Institute of Chicago. He worked as an interior designer for Marshall Field’s and Dunbar Furniture C. before founding Edward Wormley and Associates in 1944. Starting from a traditional perspective of sober classicism, he introduced European and Scandinavian innovations into his design. His furnishings are on the whole only partially modern but nevertheless extremely elegant and sophisticated.
