Eva and Nils Koppel

Eva Koppel, daughter of a bank director, was educated at the Danish Academy in Copenhagen. She married architect Nils Koppel in 1936, and together they worked in Alvar Aalto’s studio before founding their own in 1946. Initially designing simple homes, their breakthrough came with the Langelinie Pavilion in 1957. Known for large public buildings in the Brutalist style, their notable projects include the Hans Christian Ørsted Institute, the Technical University of Denmark, and the Panum Building. Eva received the Eckersberg Medal in 1955, served as vice-chairman of the Design School for Women from 1951 to 1973, and was elected to the Academy in 1972. In addition to her architectural work, she was also known for her creativity and administrative skills.
