DESIGNER

Francis Upritchard

Francis Upritchard (born 1976) is a New Zealand contemporary artist based in London. A graduate of the Ilam School of Fine Arts, she initially studied painting before turning to sculpture. In 2009, she represented New Zealand at the Venice Biennale. Upritchard’s work blends figurative sculpture, craft traditions, and design, drawing inspiration from sources ranging from Japanese folklore to science fiction. Her distinctive sculptures use materials like polymer plastic, balata, bronze, glass, and ceramics. She often collaborates with her husband, designer Martino Gamper, on the plinths for her sculptures, which have evolved from tables to steel pedestals.
