DESIGNER
Pedro Ramirez Vasquez
Pedro Ramírez Vázquez (1919–2013) was a prominent Mexican architect known for designing some of Mexico’s most iconic buildings. Influenced by European modernism, Latin American architects, and pre-Columbian cultures, he often used concrete in his designs. Ramírez Vázquez developed a system to build schools in rural areas, which was adopted by UNICEF and used worldwide. He chaired the organizing committees for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and the 1970 World Cup and was a member of the International Olympic Committee. Among his many accolades are the National Arts Award (1973), the Cemex Award (2003), and IDSA’s Special Award (1969) for his contributions to design and society.
