Hand-carved and hand-painted ceramic, wood
At the intersection of artwork and functional object, this custom piece marks a significant evolution in Lola Montes’ multidimensional practice. Sculpted magnolia blossoms drift and cascade across a deep, crystalline violet ground, evoking a suspended sense of motion. The clay is freely hand-modeled, allowing the narrative to emerge through the firing process, where heat and chance shape texture, depth, and tone. A Pompeii-red countertop enlivens the composition, its vividness the result of a carefully developed palette. Each tile is individually sculpted in a workshop near Mount Etna, incorporating volcanic ash that lends both material complexity and subtle variation. Inside, the cabinet is hand-stained in layered hues, creating a sense of depth and a richly nuanced chromatic field.
