José Zanine Caldas
(Belmonte, 1919 – 2001)
A self-educated designer, Zanine Caldas swam independently and often against the tide of the market. With the company Móveis Artisticos Z, he offered low cost pieces characterized by a modern design, thanks to the employment of a yet unexplored material, namely the plywood. In his later projects, however, he showed a more elementary approach by experimenting with chiseling directly from huge trunks, creating organic and sculptural furnishings.
