Shigeru Ban

Shigeru Ban received his bachelor's degree in architecture in 1984, after studying at the Southern California Institute of Architecture from 1977 to 1980 and the Cooper Union School of Architecture. He was apprenticed to Arata Isozaki from 1982 to 1983 before opening his own studio in Tokyo in 1985. During the 1990s he taught at various Japanese university institutions, and in 1996 he was honored in various architectural competitions. In 2014 he was awarded the Pritzker Prize for architecture. Shigeru Ban is most famous for his research in the field of tensile structures, especially in their fabrication through inexpensive materials such as cardboard or bamboo.
